Pops Concert, Governor’s Mansion

June 9, 2008

I was looking forward to the concert. I’d heard so much about it over the past years, some good comments, some not so courteous that it was time I witnessed the affair myself. It’s true you could not ask for a more perfect setting. It had all the elements, gorgeous spring day, slight breeze to cool the garden, the band set in the corner, over 300 people attending but if you went there to listen instead of experience the event, you might walk away a little disappointed.

I knew there might be a little problem when conductor David Bugli made reference to the 100th birthday of Carson City, when in truth, we all know Carson City is 150. The opening strains were weak, the musicians were late and the quality of sound was “tinny.” So they missed a few beats, came in late, notes were off, hey, it’s a concert in the park. And most of those in attendance simply needed to turn down their hearing aids and all was well. Let’s call it an event, enjoy the moment and the surrounding and call it a day. You didn’t come there for the music anyway, you came to see which resident of the Governor’s Mansion was going to greet you, Dawn or Jim Gibbons. Wasn’t that the real reason you stepped away from your margarita or martini at home?
